Garden variety risks
I’ve been building raised beds for fruits and veg the past few weeks from reclaimed wood. The little snitch (phone) must have been listening, as my social media feeds are now awash with raised bed “hacks” and alike.
Generally, these hacks are helpful, but some are context-dependent. For instance, putting down rodent-proof mesh at the base. That makes sense if you’re growing things rodents like (e.g., carrots), if there aren’t easier pickings for whatever rodents live near you, and if your bed is built in a rodent-accessible area. If these conditions aren’t met, it wastes time, resources, and money.
A lot of risk “best practice” guidance is like these hacks - generalised. If it’s free (or low-cost) advice, that’s cool. But when choosing who to listen to, ensure they’ve experienced your activities, strategy, goals, and context.
